Count words, characters, paragraphs, and approximate reading time.

Count words, characters, paragraphs, and approximate reading time. The tool works on this page without sending your input to our server. Copy results you want to keep before leaving. Inputs are not automatically saved.

How this tool works

Words are sequences of Unicode letters or numbers; an internal apostrophe stays with a word. Punctuation separates most words. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so some combined emoji or accented sequences may count as more than one. Blank lines separate paragraphs. Sentence boundaries use punctuation and can miscount abbreviations.

Reading time divides the word count by the speed you choose. The default 200 words per minute is a planning assumption, not a measurement of a particular reader. The input is limited to 50,000 characters to keep the page responsive. Some languages without spaces need a different word-segmentation method.

A shorter draft is not automatically better. This tool does not assess meaning, grammar, originality, or accessibility.

Frequently asked questions

Why do counts differ from my word processor?

Applications use different rules for punctuation, compounds, emoji, and sentence boundaries. Use one consistent method when a project has a strict count.

Does this tool store my draft?

The tool code does not upload or save your input. Your browser or extensions may have their own history or autofill behavior.
